EAT A RAINBOW – THE SMART WAY OF EATING!

rainbow-plate-fajita

Imagine eating only dal-rice for several days! The thought itself is horrifying, isn’t it?

Just like our tongue, our eyes, nose etc. also participate actively when we eat our food. Hence, it is highly important that the food should appeal to all our senses, especially eyes! Because, according to a popular adage, ‘We eat with our eyes first’! Our meal should be enticing enough for our eyes to feel hungry. And the easiest way to do is by making our plate look colourful. Different colours have different effects on our eyes and soon enough, we will be relishing our food. However, the effect of colourful food items is not only limited to our eyes!

When I was a kid, my mom always ensured that my platter was colourful and her reason was completely different from the one stated above! Eating different colours of food is not only a treat to our eyes but also to our body!

Bye-bye deprivation diets- Why we should go ahead and eat that cookie

Food cravings salad cookies

I cringe every time I hear that someone is trying to lose weight through a deprivation diet. I wonder if it is the upshot of the foodie that I am or it is because as a trained professional I know what is exactly going to happen to your body. Of course you know someone who has transformed into a prima donna by going on a deprivation diet and you gear up to use the same strategy. How difficult can this be, right? It makes absolute sense that if you starve yourself then your body will use up the stored resources (a.k.a fat cells) to meet the daily requirements and that will burn all the mean accumulated fat cells and help you become a fabulous version of yourself.

Truth: It doesn’t work. If it did – not temporarily but permanently – weight loss would not be a 148-billion-dollar industry. Continue reading

Putting an end to a big, FAT debate..!!!

Does fat make you fat? Should you give up on meat if you want to keep heart diseases at bay? Is butter better than margarine? How many times have you tossed these questions into the universe and went bonkers thinking about ways you can cut off oils, butter and fats from your diet?

healthy-fats

Interestingly, we do not have a similar attitude towards other macro nutrients. While we may have a friendly approach towards carbs and proteins, when it comes to fats, it is totally different! We dread consuming fat and try to avoid it whenever possible. One of the prominent reasons why this notion is popular is that the word ‘fat’ is also used for the mass that accumulates in our body making us overweight! However, it’s a misconception. ‘Calories’ must be the most commonly used word by people who are trying to lose weight or make lifestyle changes! And why shouldn’t it be? Counting calories makes the whole dieting business a tad easier. It is simple math isn’t it ? Eat that last piece of left over cake > Check your calorie counting app for the calories in that piece of cake > Decide to walk extra next morning. Account settled !

A COMMON SENSE APPROACH TO EATING RIGHT

Wheat flakes or aloo paratha? Which one is healthier? I bet majority of you will vote for wheat flakes! Why? Because the tv commercial says so !

Don’t eat gulab jamun – it is deep fried and cooked in sugar syrup !!!

Start eating oats, brown rice because it is high in fiber and helps weight loss.

Haven’t we rather become judgmental about food – labelling food as healthy and unhealthy depending on what we browse through the internet or view on television commercials?

This concept of healthy or unhealthy food has taken away the essence of enjoying our food and satisfying our taste buds.

Make peace with food

Our forefathers relished their meals without bothering about the health quotient. They enjoyed their fried food, sweets and savory snacks without counting the calories or grams of protein and fiber. They never really had food related health concerns like we do today. Every time I bring this example up someone always raises their finger saying – “But, they had a very active lifestyle and were not dependent on cars, washing machines and maids like we are.” Continue reading
